Monopoly GO When to Build Landmarks: The Empty-Board Cash Rule
Published July 12, 2026
Half-built boards get Shutdown taxed. Hold cash until you can clear a board, then dump during Builder’s Bash or Landmark Rush.
The fastest way to lose Monopoly GO wealth is not bad dice — it is building landmarks with just enough cash to look rich and not enough to finish the board. Other players Shutdown the open landmarks. You pay the tax.
The empty-board cash rule
Only start a board build when you can reasonably finish all landmarks on the current board (or get close enough that one short session finishes it).
A practical shorthand many players use:
- Estimate the cost of the first landmark
- Multiply by a large factor for the full board curve (boards get more expensive as you go)
- Do not poke the first build until your bank can carry the clear
Exact multipliers change by board tier, so treat this as a planning mindset, not a sacred constant. The point is: no cosmetic first landmark “just to place something.”
Why half-builds get punished
Shutdown targets unfinished value. A board with several open landmarks is a billboard that says “steal from me.”
Finished boards (or empty staging with cash held) are quieter. You want to be rich in the bank or done on the board — not stuck in between.
Event timing: Builder’s Bash / Landmark Rush
Building events reward spending on landmarks. That is when the dump happens.
Good sequence:
- Hold cash through normal days while staying careful on railroads
- Enter the build event with a stuffed bank
- Clear one board at a time as fast as you can
- Stop on a finished board if you need to step away
Bad sequence:
- Build three landmarks on Monday because you were bored
- Get Shutdown for two days
- Enter Builder’s Bash broke
Bank Heist supports the plan
If you are holding for a build event, Bank Heist is often the railroad pick that feeds the bank. Shutdown can wait unless a tournament forces attacks.
Pair this with the Shutdown vs Heist decision: cash-starved pre-event banks heist more.
Multipliers and building
High multipliers are for dice events and landmark pressure — not for randomly opening a board you cannot finish.
Before a big build dump:
- Lower the chance you get distracted into long attack wars
- Keep enough dice to land the event milestones that pay extra build value
- Finish the board you start
Emergency exceptions
Build early anyway when:
- A landmark quest requires it and the reward outweighs risk
- You are already being targeted and finishing reduces exposure
- The board has only one cheap landmark left
Even then, finish the thought. One leftover open landmark is still bait.
Common mistakes
- Placing the first landmark with no clear budget
- Building during quiet days, then going AFK
- Entering build events with an empty bank
- Chasing Shutdown drama instead of board completion
- Treating every cash windfall as an obligation to build immediately
Bottom line
Cash is a shield until it becomes a completed board. Hold until you can clear, dump during Builder’s Bash / Landmark Rush, and stop leaving half-built landmarks out overnight. Empty or finished beats expensive and exposed.
